There are in general 2 ways of connecting to a remote system. Either visually – where you see the remote screen and can use your mouse and keyboard directly – or a terminal based connection where you connect remotely through for instance ssh or telnet.
In this article we will go for the visual remote connect since people that use terminal based remote control usually already know all about terminal systems.
Naturally, you will be searching for a free remote connect solution if I’m not mistaken.
If you are using windows and have invested in some of the more pricy versions you might already have windows remote desktop feature available. However, this usually only works on similar systems and you have to deal with firewall setting, obtaining the correct IP (its a mess if its dynamic) etc. if you want to do a remote connect through the Internet. In other words this can end up as a real pain.
If you are a private person, teamviewer (www.TeamViewer.com) is a really good solution to all of this and its free unless you are representing a company and using it for such purposes.
This remote connect software comes with a bunch of features as level based access control, various display quality depending on your connection speed, voice, presentations, filetransfer etc.
teamviewer completely bypasses the need for knowing IP and lan / firewall settings. It establishes a connection to their servers and when you connect you simply need to know the ID of the machine you want to remote connect to… Then type your password and you are good to go.
Also an account feature is extremely helpful. Since this allows you to store all the machines you want in a list with nickname and grouping features. I doubt that any remote connect solution gets easier than this.
The strongest side of this remote connect software is probably that it is platform undependable. Well almost that is! You can connect in any direction between most Linux systems, mac and windows.
We have tested this brilliant remote connection software (5 series) successfully and found no problems so far.
5 out of 5 stars from us!
